When Will was in law school in Nebraska, one of our favorite spots for Saturday lunch was the Teppanyaki grill in the mall food court in Lincoln, Nebraska. And as soon as I made this recipe he said “remember that spot in the Lincoln Mall?” Ha! Mission accomplished. Lot’s of good food memories from our days in Nebraska, but happy to have been able to recreate this dish with a healthy twist to share with all of you.

Sauce inspo came from this recipe from What Great Grandma Ate.

Paleo Teppanyaki Style Steak Stir Fry

Servings 4 people

Ingredients

  • 1 lb steak, thinly sliced
  • 3 tbsp ghee
  • 2 carrots, sliced
  • 1/2 medium head cabbage, roughly shredded
  • 1 head broccoli, cut into florets
  • cauliflower rice sub: white rice if not paleo

Yakitori Sauce

  • 1/2 C coconut aminos
  • 1/4 C water
  • 1/4 C rice wine vinegar
  • 2 tsp honey sub 1 pitted medjool date (blend sauce in blender if you use a date)
  • 1/2 tbsp arrow root powder
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder

Instructions

  • Place 2 large skillets on the stove. If you wish to only use one pan to reduce dishes, follow the steps to cook the steak first. Remove Steak & cook vegetables. Remove vegetables from the pan, add the steak back in. Followed by adding the sauce.
  • For the Steak: In one skillet, melt 1 tbsp ghee over medium heat. Add steak in a single layer. Season with Salt & pepper. Allow to cook through 3-4 minutes per side in order to develop a slight crust on the meat.
  • For the veggies. In the 2nd skillet over low-medium heat melt 2 tbsp ghee. Add all of the veggies. Toss to coat with ghee, season with salt & pepper. Cover the pan and allow the veggies to steam for 6-7 minutes. Tossing them every few minutes.
  • For the Sauce: While the steak and veggies are cooking mix together your sauce ingredients in a bowl.
  • Add the Sauce to the pan with the steak. Allow the sauce to come to a boil, reduce heat and let simmer for 2-3 minutes until thick. There will be extra sauce in the pan. This is on purpose to allow you to have extra sauce to drizzle over the veggies should you prefer that.
  • While the Sauce is cooking. Adding 1/4 C of water to the pan of veggies. Cover again & allow to finish steaming while the sauce thickens. About 2-3 minutes.
  • Lastly, Serve steak & veggies over cauliflower rice. (I like the microwave version from Costco). or Regular Rice.

Notes

Kid Friendly: If you are feeding a little one alongside this meal. The steamed broccoli is great for baby led weaning. Also slices of steak can be chewed / sucked on by babies ages 6 months +.
