Whole30 Crispy Orange Beef

My man is not a fan of take out, but he is a fan of steak. So when this lady is craving some good ole’ chinese takeout I rope him in with a nice steak dinner – in the form of crispy beef!

I do think it’s important to have a balanced meal full of protein, vegetables & all the vital nutrients. You could easily bulk up this dish with a side of roasted broccoli, serving over cauliflower fried rice (favorite recipe here, I eliminate the sausage when serving as a side).

Whole30 Crispy Orange Beef

Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 15 minutes
Total Time 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 lb sirloin steak, sliced thin sub flank steak
  • 4 tbsp avocado oil split
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 tbsp arrowroot flour
  • 2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
  • 1 jalapeno, julianned
  • salt & Pepper
  • scallion, chopped optional garnish

Orange Stir Fry Sauce

  • 1/4 C coconut aminos
  • 1/2 C chicken stock or broth
  • 1/3 C orange juice
  • 2 Tbsp rice wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 1 tbsp orange zest
  • 1 tsp fish sauce

Instructions

  • First mix the sauce ingredients in a bowl or large measuring cup & set aside.
In a bowl, toss the sirloin steak  with the arrowroot. Add a pinch of salt & pepper.
In a large frying pan, over medium heat. Add 2 Tbsp of  oil . When the oil is hot,  Add the beef. This step might have to be completed in batches as it is important not to overcrowd the pan. Cook the beef for 2 minutes, then flip. Cooking for an additional 2 minutes. Leaving the beef untouched while cooking to allow it time to crisp up. Remove from pan & set aside.  If doing in batches, add additional oil if needed.
After all the beef has been cooked and set aside, add the sesame oil to the pan. Add the garlic & jalapeno & cook for 30 seconds.
Next, Add in the sauce mixture. Using a wooden spoon, scrape the bottom of the pan to pick up all the brown bits left from the beef. Allow the sauce to come to a boil. Reduce heat & let simmer for 1 -2 minutes.
Add the beef back to the pan & give it a quick stir to integrate it evenly in the pan. Let the sauce continue to simmer for 3-5 minutes or until it has reduced to your desired consistency.
Garnish & Serve over cauliflower rice with a side of roasted vegetables.

Notes

Slice your beef while the steak is still slightly frozen. This makes slicing the strips easier due to the steak being firm. It is okay to cook the steak if it’s still slightly frozen when you begin the dish.
Substitute the jalapenos for green onions.
There are very little veggies in this dish, I recommend adding a side of roasted broccoli to your meal.
