Baby Led Weaning: Ideas on How to Introduce Allergens

August 13, 2020 2 Comments

This post is really going to serve as an ongoing journal of how we are introducing allergens to Charlie during our feeding journey. I will continue to add to this post as we make our way through the list of allergens. Make sure to comment below to share your introduction stories for other moms to see!

Important: Introduce allergens individually or alongside other safe foods that your baby has already consumed successfully.

Also Note: I am not a medical professional. Please consult with your pediatrician for medically supported research & information as it relates to your child. This research I shared is based solely on our individual experience while feeding our son Charlie.

Peanut Butter

Idea 1: Mix 2 tsp of creamy peanut butter with 2-3 Tbsp of oat bran hot cereal. We introduced Charlie to oat bran + mashed bananas & cinnamon first and then began mixing in peanut butter.

Idea 2: Mix 2 tsp of creamy peanut with your babies favorite fruit or vegetable puree/mash.

Idea 3: Frozen! Charlies is teething, so anything cold is key! A quick blend of 1 C spinach, 1 tbsp peanut butter, 1/2 C Frozen fruit, 1 banana, and 1/2 C either water or expressed milk; and frozen in a baby food mold can be popped into a silicone or mesh feeder. trays and popped into silicone or mesh feeders. See freezer mold & feeders linked here.

Idea 4: Make a dip. In a bowl, stir together ½ cup whole milk yogurt (if you’ve introduced dairy), ¼ cup canned pumpkin puree, 2 tablespoons PB, and a pinch of cinnamon. Spread the dip on teething biscuits. You can also mix PB with just water to thin it out and spread it on the banana egg pancakes below!

Idea 5: Breakfast cookies via Love & Zest. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F; line baking sheet with parchment paper. In a mixing bowl, stir together ½ cup raw oats, ½ cup pureed butternut squash or sweet potatoes, ¼ cup PB, and ½ teaspoon cinnamon. Roll into 12 even cookies and smash with a fork. Bake for 12 minutes; allow to cool before serving to baby.

Eggs

Idea 1: Banana Egg Pancakes from My Fussy Eater : Mash 1 banana. Add to a bowl & mix with 1 egg. Stir in 1/4 C oats (I used oat bran) + pinch of cinnamon. Spray a frying pan with avocado oil and make pancakes using about 2 Tbsp of the pancake mixture. Cook for about 2 minutes per side.

Idea 2: Combine a mashed hard boiled or scrambled egg with avocado or other vegetable puree

Idea 3: Make an eggy oatmeal scramble. Click here for Recipe

Fish

When purchasing fish, select a fish that is wild caught & low in mercury levels. It is also important to make sure fish has been properly deboned to avoid choking hazards.

Idea 1: Make Salmon Patties. Recipe here.

Idea 2: In a blender combine fish with pureed vegetables & breastmilk for a simple puree.

Dairy

Idea 1: Combine a small amount of Whole Milk yogurt with applesauce or avocado.

Idea 2: Make pancakes! Recipe here

Wheat:

When purchasing bread it is best to look for a whole wheat or sprouted loaf. I recommend Dave’s Killer Bread.

Idea 1: Toast slice of bread. Cut into Finger like strips. Top with yogurt, smashed avocado, smashed hard boiled eggs, or any thin layer of nut butter
